Brief

SeventeenFortyTwo is Stewarts Garden Centre’s membership magazine. Full of gardening tips and tricks, exclusive offers and beautiful gift ideas, it’s one of the Privilege Club members’ favourite perks. Stewarts asked us to redesign the mag to create a fresher, more modern look and feel.

A person using a digital tablet and stylus to create colorful botanical illustrations, including flowers, leaves, strawberries, a carrot, and a chocolate bar, in a watercolor-style drawing app. A vibrant promotional design for summer smoothies at a coffee shop, featuring mason jar smoothies in various flavors, with red straws, set on woven trays, alongside illustrated strawberries and chocolate on a deep purple background.
An open magazine featuring an article on cacti and succulent care, with a promotion for a desert terrarium masterclass, placed on a wooden table alongside a cappuccino with latte art, a potted plant, and reading glasses.

APPROACH

As a long-standing magazine, SeventeenFortyTwo had become quite outdated and cluttered. We wanted to modernise it and also make it more readable. So we created a new, easy to read font, and stripped the design back to free up space and create more flow.

We also created a series of hand-drawn botanical illustrations, which are peppered throughout the magazine to tie in the garden centre theme and create extra creativity interest.

The new design and layout allows for key points, tips, prices and offers to be highlighted using roundels and callouts.

IMPACT

We’re proud to have created a beautiful new design that was very well received by Amy Stewart, who we worked closely with throughout. We’ll be rolling out the magazine’s new look and feel for all issues moving forward, and look forward to continuing our 10-year partnership with this brilliant local brand.

A visually rich ‘Edible Garden’ collage featuring fresh herbs, blueberries, and chopped greens on a wooden cutting board, accented with botanical illustrations of leaves and flowers on a green and cream background. An open gardening magazine on a wooden outdoor table, featuring a spring planting guide with colorful flower bulbs and a section on children’s gardening, alongside a cup of coffee in soft natural sunlight.
A copy of Seventeen Forty Two magazine featuring a close-up of pink calla lilies, placed on a rustic surface against an exposed brick wall, with a potted succulent and a glowing industrial-style hanging light bulb.
It’s been a pleasure to work with Halo for over 10 years now, from our magazine design, to our in store signage and communications. Their enthusiasm for our little brand is greatly appreciated. It’s been brilliant to have their fresh thinking on our recent magazine design refresh.
