Brief

UK for UNHCR is the UN Refugee Agency’s national charity partner. They are at the forefront of fundraising efforts in the UK to support UNHCR’s global humanitarian operations.

In 2023, we partnered with UK for UNHCR to enhance their online visibility through organic SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) and to provide essential ongoing website support and maintenance. Our goal was to ensure that all content and data were safe, secure, and effectively served their purpose of generating donations and sharing refugee stories.

As an agency passionate about working with charities, we couldn’t wait to get started on this growing and hugely important impact-led organisation.

APPROACH

Our initial piece of work for UK for UNHCR was to undertake a full audit of their website. Our audits are a great place to start when reviewing any website, as they provide insight into how it’s performing, both technically and from an SEO perspective. 

Following the audit, we outlined our top recommendations and actions for each area.

IMPACT

Previously, UK for UNHCR only ranked well for branded search terms, as they had very little technical SEO on the site. The website wasn’t optimised for generic non-branded terms that would ensure visibility for key subject areas and build their awareness across a new audience.  

They also had a fairly poor site performance score, with large images causing slow load times and technical errors that needed fixing and maintenance.

In the last 9 months our SEO team have; 

  • Optimised the top viewed pages with strong metadata including; meta titles, focus keywords, H1 titles, meta descriptions and alt tags. 
  • Completed a content review  
  • Supported the UK for UNHCR marketing team with focus keywords for new pages and content
  • Copywriting for new website content, including campaigns and generic blog posts. 

 

We’re pleased to have seen a considerable increase in UK for UNHCRs online visibility through organic search rankings. Some highlights have been: 

  • Rankings in the top 5 for ‘Refugee week’ related keywords (previously no rankings) following content and optimisation work we completed as part of the 2024 Refugee Week campaign. 
  • Page 1 rankings for location-specific refugee keywords (e.g. UK support for Ukraine) 
  • Significant improvements for non-branded donation-related keywords such as ‘how to help refugees’ now ranking number 5.
