Why mission, vision and values matter for your brand image

The way you define your values shapes the way the world defines you.

We’ve already talked about how important your mission, vision and values are internally. But now, let’s flip the lens. Because while they play a huge role in building culture inside your business, they’re just as critical in shaping how the outside world sees you.

Your mission, vision and values are the foundation of your brand identity and your external communications. Get them right, and you’ll have customers, partners and investors who trust you, believe in you and choose you. Get them wrong (or worse, don’t live by them), and you’ll struggle to cut through.

What are mission, vision and values?

At their core, these three statements give your business its sense of direction and identity. They set the framework for how you operate, where you’re heading and what you stand for.

Mission – your purpose

It’s why you exist and what you do day-to-day. A good mission statement is short, clear and actionable – something people can rally behind.

  • Google’s mission is: “To organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
  • Apple keeps it simple too: “To create technology that empowers people and enriches their lives.”

Vision – your future

It’s where you’re working towards. It’s less about the ‘what’ and more about the ‘where you’re going’.We leverage multiple platforms (Google Ads, Meta, Bing) to reach a wider audience at different stages of the user journey to maximise campaign impact.

  • IKEA’s vision is a great example: “To create a better everyday life for many people.”

Values – your principles

The behaviours and beliefs that guide how you do things, shaping your culture and influencing every decision you make.

  • IKEA lists their values as togetherness, simplicity and leading by example, to name a few. These principles run through everything they do, from product design to sustainability initiatives.

Why do they matter internally?

Inside your business, they:

  • Create a shared sense of purpose among employees.
  • Guide decision-making and prioritisation.
  • Shape company culture and employee engagement.
  • Help attract and retain people whose personal values align with yours.

Why they matter externally

Your mission, vision and values go beyond the walls of your office, shaping perceptions, influencing choices and building your reputation.

Here’s how:

  • They build trust and credibility – Customers, partners, stakeholders and investors want to know what you stand for. Clear, authentic values make you more believable and relatable.
  • They act as a differentiator – In crowded markets, your values set you apart. They show why someone should choose you over a competitor.
  • They demonstrate authenticity – Consistency across your brand messaging makes people feel confident you are who you say you are.
  • They encourage loyalty – When customers see your values in action, they feel connected to you on a deeper level, which keeps them coming back.

And it’s not just big businesses that need mission, vision and values. Whether you’re a start-up finding your feet or an established company with years behind you, they give you clarity and direction. Done well, they give people a clear reason to trust your brand – helping customers believe in what you stand for today, and where you’re heading tomorrow.

Actions speak louder than words

Here’s the kicker: it’s not enough to say you have great values – you have to live them. Customers are smart; they can spot a gap between what a brand says and what it does. And nothing kills trust faster than misalignment.

If a company shouts about sustainability but cuts corners in its supply chain, or claims to “put people first” but treats employees badly, it damages reputation instantly. On the other hand, when your actions consistently reflect your words, you create an authentic, trustworthy brand image that resonates.

How can we help?
